Wildebeest Migration.
Among the most things people want to see when they visit Serengeti is the wildebeest migration. This is one of the world’s wild wonders.
In this region, there are over 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelles are 400,000 and 200,000 zebra.

Migration.
The migration takes on from Eastern and Southern grazing plains to the dry season water areas in the North and back.
They move between fresh green grass patches while meandering in a clockwise direction, but not in straight line.
It really becomes unpredictable to the migrations destination since it depends on weather patterns entirely and can vary in almost 3 months.
So mobile camps work best during migration safaris because movements entirely depend on the weather.

This is how migration moves.
June-July         Western Corridor Season Camp.
August-November    Northern Serengeti Seasonal Camp.
December-March    Ndutu Seasonal Camp in Southern Serengeti.
April-May        Southern plains to Moru Kopjes.

Best places to see migration.
April-May        Moru Seasonal Camp in the Southwestern Serengeti.
June-July        Western Corridor Seasonal Camp.
December-March     Ndutu Seasonal camp in Southern Serengeti.
August-November    Northern Serengeti Seasonal Camp.

Details.
Within a space of 1 month, all the wildebeest cows give birth to calves in February or March. This takes place in Southern Serengeti and Eastern short grass plains.
Calves run in a few minutes after being born and a few hours, they are beyond the lion’s reach probably. However, the calves become victims of prey since they cannot run very fast and in short time, they become some one’s breakfast. This period particularly targets the calves by the lions.

The wildebeest wait on the plains all time. This is because the short grass cannot cover them up during ambush from the predators, with a 3% increase in calf mortality rate as a result until the migrating process has reached its toll.

The plains however have no permanent water sources and it takes a short time for the things to dry up. The water holes dry from evaporation since Serengeti has a high salt content.
So the remaining water becomes saltier and the animals have no other alternative but to move on. It was suggested that the focal point of moving is the water turning to its critical point of moving is the water turning to its critical point of these salt levels.

The  migration moves to the Southern plains by may or June through Moru Kopses towards central Serengeti and Western Corridor as the rains get underway. The bulls become more aggressive. They keep on running around in circles to defend their females from the bulls passing by. From a great distance, here you can find vast herds of wildebeest of cavorting males out the rocking shape.
There is plenty of fighting and great noise, with the herds surrounding almost like enormous group of bull frogs.

By July or August, the animals move through Central Serengeti from Moru to the Western Corridor. They cross Grumeti River from here and they encounter a number of crocodiles while crossing the river. The animals reach Mara River between August and October and start crossing with the river having plenty of monster crocodiles.

By localized rain showers, they start crossing forward and backward in and out of either Serengeti or Mara.
The arrival of short rains when things turn green in November, the animals move South again. And by this time of the year, large numbers of herds are found around Loliondo and Lobo. They move back on the Eastern and Southern plains within a month or 2 once again.

Serengeti Migrations.
Serengeti Migrations are driven by weather and therefore unpredictable. So Mobile Camps are sued in this way, to find migration as it moves throughout Serengeti. Moving is timed by several weeks in extreme wet dry seasons.

These areas visited have no permanent camps, therefore with a Mobile Camp, it becomes easier to catch up with the wildebeest between August and October along Mara River where they spend much time.

Visit the wildebeest migrations for more information, unpredictable weather and the move along with the herds of animals.
Its more rewarding to spend some time in Loliondo and Serengeti to increase your chances of seeing migration. This can be experienced by 2 mobile camps, which are used in Northern Tanzania.

Moru Kopjes.
Kopjes is an Afrikaans name (Pronounced as “copy”), referring to Inselbergs and large clusters of granite rock which are found in many parks of Tanzania mainly in Serengeti. These are ancient hard plugs of rock raised up through the softer layer of volcanic ash soil.
The place consists of various Kopjes in a sea of grassland of different sizes.

The Kopjes are shaped like enormous bread loaves and rounded vast granite blocks. Some have dense tree growth and bush, others are bare rocks, while others have varying degree vegetation.
Its in contrast about anything of the Kopjes t the plains and it real reflects the perfect views.

Moru is situated in the Serengeti Southern Plains at the Western edge, half way between Ndutu and Western corridor of vultures and to the Southwest of Seronera.

Moru marks the Southern plains migration highlights on the Western edge of Serengeti National Park. Its this route that the wildebeest take as they move away from the Southern plains to the Western Corridor and Central Serengeti in early June and in May.

Moru is just a group of different Kopjes. Others include Golkopjes and Barafu Kopjes and on the road between Naabi and Seronera lies the Simba Kopjes.

With a couple of days spent, here with other locations in the park well placed between the plains and the Western Corridor, Moru is quite enough to called a separate area of its own. Nevertheless, it has a variety of attractions such as the Kopjes beautiful scenery, plains, River Mbalageti and also the excellent atmosphere for relaxation.

Moru is also a home to cats and they look more photographic, while on the scenery and the best way to see them is climb up the rock in the early morning and just watch.
In this place, you will have spectacular views at buffaloes, giraffe, elephants and lioness chasing hartebeest.

Best place to stay is Moru Seasonal Camp.

Migration.
Wildebeest crossing River Mara is the most exciting scene all people want to see.
They spend tie here crossing forward and backward of Mara. This becomes often in the months of July and October, to see this, depending on the weather.

This is an impressive sight as you see hundreds of animals crossing fast flowing waters of River Mara. In the process, some are left in the hands of the crocodiles, while others escape. Its largely a matter of luck as it becomes very difficult to cross.

Mara’s big part lies in Tanzania and its not realized by a lot of people. If you are staying in the North, its easily accessible at Ololosokwan via the North East. This place is excellent with a picnic and a full day game drive.

The place is also home to a number of game throughout the year especially in the areas of Grumeti and Lobo and in the riverine forests you can see the lions and leopards lying along the river lines and Kopjes, probably in the morning as well as the cheetah sightings also being common.

Stunning views of elephant families drinking along the springs just North of Lobo under the hills also will excite you.
You can also have a chance to sight the giraffe, buffalo and all different types of plain game.

Ugly scar is the main highway in Serengeti and it helps in re-activating the park’s traffic. You can see a number of game along this road and along stopping they slowly disappear away from the scene.

There are some magnificent riverine trees along the river such as mahoganies and figs and a variety of different bird species such as Turacos, fish eagles and not forgetting a number of King fishers along the rivers intervals like Sentinels.

Central Serengeti.
Central Serengeti is an area dominated by fringed river courses and hills covered with wide grass plains, while the yellow barked acacia trees dominate the Seronera valley. For adventure tours and vacation safari Tanzania Safari touring and travel destinations in Tanzania.
From South East as you drive to Serengeti from the typical Ndutu area covered with short grass, the typical Ndutu area covered with short grass plains, you can see the progress through the medium grass at Naabi to longer grasses in this area.

The change in the grass plains brings a difference in animal species and the area becomes dominated by Topi and hartebeest than the South of the park.

Migration highlights.
The herds spread to central Serengeti from Southern plains on their way West and North of Serengeti.
Rivers in Central Serengeti become focal points for game viewing as they come to drink in the dry season.
