Olduvai Gorge is the right place when you are looking for a special destination with a few places having the same impact like. The place is awesome, beautiful, extraordinary spectacular - Richard Leaky.
Olduvai Gorge I located in the Serengeti National Park in the Eastern plains. The Gorge is 295 feet deep and 48km in length. Formed by tectonic movements that shaped the Greta Rift Valley.
A stunning land was formed over 5 million years ago, of red rock plain and cut in this place. The archaeological importance has further intensified the beauty of the site-cradle of mankind.
Thus being a home to the beast which have lived in the area over two million years ago as well as a site to the remains of early man, hence being referred to as “the cradle of mankind”.
Among the objects and items here include pre-historic elephants, giant horned sheep, fossils of numerous birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, enormous ostriches and not forgetting the remains of long extinct mammals of over 150 species being different.
Also interesting are the personal remains of early ma as well as parts of the bones a round Olduvai Gorge.
Among them include rough shelter and butchery and not forgetting the cleaners and hand axes stone tool technologies.
Nut Cracker man and Leakeys Discovery.
This was well-known husband and wife digging-duo with their son Richard who discovered Olduvai Gorge from 1930s to 1960s.
The remains of the archaeological finds were made and found here in Oduvai.
The remains include the skull of Louis Leakey’s Nut Crackerman (because of his giant molars, he was called so, bigger than our own 4 times). That dates back 1.7 million years while at Lactoli homidnid foot prints South of Olduvai Gorge to day at Visitor Centre can be seen.
New man Species.
At Olduvai sites, new species of man were found with a different tooth shape, cranium capacity and different bone densities showing a whole new early man species.
It was suggested by Louis that human evolution started in Africa instead of Asia as it was believed since he dates back the existance of various species as well suggesting the different lines had evolved in parallel of hominid families.
For his cowboy approach, Leakey was criticized heavily due to the evolutionary thinking, which came against his theories. However, by 1970, Leakey’s ‘Homo Habilis’ that took the right place of our family tree root to reclaim the correct evolutionary theories.
Olduvai Gorge has a small museum with full information of a bout archaeological treasures which makes it excellent for visiting.
