10 Day Tour, Serengeti Wildebeest Migration
The Seronera Plains, found in the Serengeti National Park southeast region further extend into the spectacular western Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and form the major ungulate calving grounds. In January, the large herds of wildebeests, gazelles and zebras are in the southern plains of Serengeti.
In February these wildebeest start foaling and this they do approximately at the same time as with the predators up close. Between March to April, approaching are heavy rains so the grazing begins to becomes worse. The herd starts moving northwards via the western-corridor of the plains of the Serengeti.
The real migration normally begins from the finish of April up to the start of June, with a populace of over one million migrating different animals all marching in a strident column that stretches to about 40Km long; being one of the most fascinating spectacles in the whole world. The herd moves heading to the Grumeti restricted area which has good grazing land and there they cross river Grumeti where they find numerous eagerly waiting crocodiles ready to feast on them. Such scenes have made the annual wildebeest migration well-known in very many international wildlife documentaries.
starting July up to October, the ungulates scatter again, with approximately half of their population crossing River Mara into the Masai Mara Game reserve found in Kenya, and the remaining ones spreading through to the north and west parts of the Serengeti.
The best period to tour is starting December although to February and also starting May up to July.
Day 1: arrival in Arusha
On arrival to Kilimanjaro you will be transferred to Ilboru Safari Lodge found in Arusha. Spend the rest of the day at leisure as you unwind by the pool-side as you recover from the flight, or explore Arusha town.
Day 2: Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park
On having breakfast, begin the safari with a drive to the verdant and stunning Lake Manyara National Park to enjoy game viewing. At 1300 hours we shall have a picnic lunch in the park-picnic area. in the evening drive to NsiyaTented Lodge where you will dine and spend the night.
Day 3: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast at Nsiya Tented Lodge, set out for a game drive as you head to the great Serengeti Plains driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After a wonderful picnic lunch continue with a game drive through the central part of Serengeti national park about Seronera or sketch the course of the migration. Dine and slumber at Ikoma Bush Tented Camp.
Enjoy the entire day game viewing in Serengeti National Park basing on the period of the year and where the migration of the animals is. Be prepared to see antelopes, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, lions, elephants, baboons, zebras, Monkey, rhinos, in addition to a profusion of birds. Drive to Ikoma Bush Tented Camp in the evening for the overnight.
Day 5: another full day game drive in the Southern of Serengeti
Following breakfast we shall carry with us a packed lunch and proceed for a game drive in the plains of Serengeti National Park. The annual migration can be watched on an elongated chain about forty Km towards the south-west direction. About 1230 hours and 1300 hours, we shall break for lunch. On having lunch we will continue with our game-viewing as we follow the movement of the migrants towards the southwest part of the park. roughly 1.3 million wildebeests, 200000 Zebras and 250000 gazelles have so far been recorded taking part in this great migration. Dine and slumber at Ikoma Bush Tented Camp.
Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro
After an early game drive in the morning through the Serengeti we shall have a picnic lunch as we drive to the Ngorongoro crater. Along the way we shall stop by the Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey made their famed archaeological discoveries; among their findings where some of remnants man’s earliest recognized ancestor. Dine and sleep at Rhino Lodge.
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater
Today we descend to the Ngorongoro Crater floor which is 2000 feet / more than 600m for a crater tour. We shall explore the verdant forest region occupied by monkeys as well as elephants and the lake region which attracts numerous flamingos. We will further visit the wide open savannah to see lions hunting. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the crater floor. Dine and sleep at Rhino Lodge.
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire National Park
Today we head to Tarangire National Park which is a small park that offers splendid sights. Through the dry season, the park is filled with wildlife and numerous bird species that gather by the river banks of River Tarangire. We shall slumber at our lodge within the park as we enjoy breathtaking views and the exceptional ambience. Late in the afternoon we shall drive to Tanzania Safari Lodge.
Day 9: Tarangire Cultural Tour
Have breakfast at Tanzania Safari Lodge, and spend the rest of the day at leisure or tour the Maasai cultural region, visiting the datoga tribes. The Maasai people reside in these areas together with the Datoga. Learning more about their impressive history is quite fascinating and you will also enjoy wonderful views from the different hilltop peaks. Dine and slumber at Tanzania Safari Lodge.
Day 10: Tarangire to Arusha
Following breakfast, depart from Tarangire with packed lunch and drive to Arusha town. From there you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport to catch your departure flight.
